Symposium on Ethical Use of AI in Economics

A free online symposium, 22 January 2025, 14:30 to 16:00 GMT chaired by Carlos Cortinhas, University of Exeter. Video from the session is embedded further down this page.

As artificial intelligence becomes an increasingly integral part of higher education, research, and society, it raises profound ethical questions. This event brought together leading experts to explore the opportunities and challenges AI presents, focusing on responsibility, equity, and integrity.

Our three speakers guided us through key dimensions of this critical topic:

  • Caitlin Bentley (King's College London) presented "A Responsible AI Vision for Higher Education," examining how we can foster ethical AI practices in teaching and learning.
  • Steven Proud (University of Bristol) discussed "AI in Economics Education Research: Ethical Frontiers and Journal Responses", shedding light on how AI is reshaping scholarly publishing and the associated ethical considerations.
  • Edwin Ip (University of Exeter) explored "AI in hiring: Impact on applicants, diversity and inclusion" addressing how AI systems can perpetuate or mitigate biases and impact equity.
