Improving economics teaching and learning for over 20 years

CPD Event – Progressing as a teaching-track economist & supporting teaching-track colleagues

14 March 2024, 13.00-14.30, online Edited video below.

This free workshop – run for the Royal Economic Society by the Economics Network and CTaLE – is designed for economists on the teaching track and for those in roles supporting and/or assessing teaching-track colleagues, such as Heads of Departments.

We shared a summary of the main findings of our recent research project on Teaching-Track Economists in Canada, the UK and the US, emphasising relevant learnings for the track in the UK. A key insight from the project is that there is some uncertainty about how to interpret promotion criteria, around education scholarship for example.

The workshop included a discussion of what scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) is, how it is understood within the UK higher education context and how to develop and evidence expertise and experience for promotion and/or applications (such as for Advance HE fellowships).

Presenters shared experience and insight from the research project and their own careers and offered practical guidance to better understand these roles and how to support and assess those in them.
